Florida Building Code
The Florida Building Code applies to the construction, erection, alteration, modification, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, maintenance, removal and demolition of every public and private building, structure or facility or floating residential structure, or any appurtenances connected or attached to such buildings, structures or facilities.  The purpose of the Florida Building Code is to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards.
Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any impact resistant coverings, electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the Building Official and obtain the required permit.  A list of items that do not require a building permit is found at the link to the left titled "What Doesn't Need A Permit?" If you are still unsure whether you need a permit or have any questions please call the Department at (863) 946-6018.
All work requiring a permit must be performed by a licensed contractor, unless you are applying for and qualify as an owner-builder.  If you are applying as an owner-builder you have three options: you do the work yourself, you hire a licensed contractor to do the work, or you act as the contractor and hire employees (which means you are required to have worker's compensation and liability insurance and remove taxes from the paycheck).
Always ask to see the state license of the person you are hiring. You can also find licensing information at the Florida Department of Professional Regulation. Glades County still reregisters existing specialty licenses for a few local businesses and these businesses can operate within Glades County under this license, please call us to verify these licenses at (863) 946-6018.
